Description

A pair of Gila Woodpeckers is cleaning out a nest cavity in a Giant Saguaro Cactus so they can make a new nest. Gilas often make the original nest, which is taken over by Starlings or Cactus Wrens the next year. The photo was taken in Surprise, Arizona.

I'm very familiar with Surprise having been out in the desert there many times. There are so many birds of all kinds in the area. In one spot there is a type of hawk that has made a nest and every year she and her mate raise their chicks there. This is an astonishing shot! One I'd love to get someday.
