Description

This a very popular Beauty spot.we used to go there allot when we were teenagers, The hill is part of ridge of sandy limestone rock that is elevated above the lower lying clay vales and nearby Somerset Levels. The sedimentary rocks were laid down in the part of the early Jurassic known as the Toarcian Stage.[2] They are given their colour by the weathering of the iron content of the stone and contain fossils such as the ammonite Dumortieria moorei.[3] The hamstone is a distinctive honey-coloured building stone that has been used in local villages and for buildings such as Montacute House and Sherborne Abbey. Extensive old quarry workings have changed the landscape into a warren of stoney ridges and grassy hollows.

Sure is an interesting place! The local stone has a distinct finish, and I like the layers of history with the monument on the mound!
