Description
City Center in the Dunes Old street (as in.. over 500 years old) with some 17th and 18th century houses and a gate in the middle of old center of Den Haag / The Hague. Here the city is still a village.. and hecktic life is far away.. Old The Hague was build (around 1200) on a dune top. One can still notice it everywere in town.
The Stone The grey stones in the 'street' were made of different (harder) stone than the rest of the street. This was done because of the wheels of horse-pulled wagons, that would damage the softer stone.
No Glass / Tax The windows without glass (on the left) had to do with Glass-Tax (18th/19th century). The more glass your house had.. to richer you presumebly were.. the more tax you had to pay. So people removed some glass and replaced it by brick. ... and paid less tax :D

This really is an amazing setting Chris, and made even more special knowing it is over 500 years old. The grey stones must be very sturdy to have held up so well after all this time. Also it was interesting to read how the people tried to avoid some taxes even back then.

Over here in the US, people freak over "LEAD PAINT" - lol... they have so many codes against it and it has to be removed before selling, blah, blah, blah.... What's the worst thing your Country deals with with selling homes? Curious, cause let's face it, some of your homes are OLD - lol nice shot, it looks more like a couple of sidewalks built in the US between to homes in say 1900 to 1940s.
