For nine ages, the Allied Chantry had ruled over Thedas with an iron fist, but its expansion had been inhibited by the presence of the Krunan in the north, the mountains in the west, the ocean to the east, and the barren wilds to the south. But that restriction become challenged in the wake of the discovery of the Mass Gates, ancient relics that enable travel over vast distances. With them, the Chantry can now send its missionaries into new lands to convert the willing - or send its templars to crush the heretics. Soon, all the races of Thedas - the elf-born Asari and Arturians, the subterranean Dwarians, and perhaps even the giant, brutish Krunan, shall know the Maker. Or they will perish.
