Description
One of the peacocks in the park of Eggenberg Schloss in Graz, Austria. They were very friendly and used to people, and in a very amorous mood...
Peafowl are best known for the male's extravagant tail, which it displays as part of courtship. The male is called a peacock, and the female a peahen. In Greco-Roman mythology the Peacock is identified with the goddess Hera (Juno). The eyes are said to symbolize the vault of heaven and the 'eyes' of the stars. In Hinduism, the Peacock is associated with Lakshmi, a deity representing benevolence, patience, kindness, compassion and good luck. In Babylonia and Persia the Peacock is seen as a guardian to royalty, and is often seen in engravings upon the thrones of royalty. In Christianity, the peacock is an ancient symbol of eternal life.
It's fascinating that a symbol of masculine vanity, the peacock, in some cultures became associated with maternal femininity. ;D

Beautiful colors and details. Nice to see them roaming free and not in a zoo enclosure. Love the information. Dana

He is a beauty Sandra. Very nice shot, as peacocks don't show themselves off too often. We have some peacocks in High Park but they are part of the (touchless) petting zoo and do not roam the park as this one apparently does.

I used to have Peacock feathers in my Art Deco apartment and was told by friends that it would be unlucky to have them in the house - not true ! on the contrary, when I sold the apartment I was doing very well, thank you very much, they brought me luck ... fine image Sandra, BB
