When you attend a Renaissance Faire in a kilt (either modern kilt, wee kilt, or great kilt), you will probably get such questions. BTW, the hemline of the kilt in this image is too low ... it should come down only to the kneecap; the hose (socks) are probably correct -- you should see about 3 inches of bare leg between the kilt hem and the top of the hose.
