Description
“That’s the alley just ahead.” Stan killed the lights and the patrol car slowed.
At the same time I picked up the mike, “3121"
“3121" Dispatch answered.
“We’re 1097 the area.”
“3121 copy”.
The patrol car slowed to a stop at the edge of the alley. The alley was dark and quiet. You couldn’t see the far end for a patch of fog. “Looks like the powers out.” Stan muttered. It was indeed quiet almost eerily so. We sat there for a couple of minutes then I picked up the mike again. “3121"
Dispatch answered. “3121 go ahead.”
“What was the exact nature of this disturbance call?” “
“Stand bye.” 3121 we actually have two calls. The first was of some kind of disturbance NFD from the pay phone at the corner of Ireland Alley and 131st. The second was from the same payphone three minutes later. A male advised he heard screaming and he needed law enforcement ASAP.” Both hung up before we could get any exacts.”. The phone booth where the call had come from was empty.
“3121 copied, we’‘ll be out on foot.” “Roger 3121."
Stan pulled the unit into the alley blocking the street. We started down the alley on foot. There were no sounds save our foot steps.
“Damn, the temperature must have dropped 15 degrees and where did the frigging fog come from?”, Stan whispered.
He was right, just five minutes ago we had been commenting on the nice night and how the warm temperature would bring the “squirrels” out. Now it was suddenly much colder and the patch of fog had moved up the alley towards us. I began to wish I had brought my jacket with me tonight.
The alley was a blind alley. There were still no lights at all, everything including the street lights were dark. “Wonder if we need to notify the power company” Just as Stan said this a street light, just one came on.
“That’s weird. Just one light works?”
The fog had gotten much thicker now. You couldn’t even see the patrol car. Suddenly there was a muffled “POP” from up ahead. We stopped. As I strained to listen into the dense fog, I heard something. “Stan, maybe I’m nuts but does that sound like, kind of like, you know spurs?”
Stan didn’t say anything for a second. “Yeah, it kind of does.”
Suddenly four figures seemed to materialize out of the fog under the street lamp. It was like “Now you don’t see them, now you do”.
The four dark figures moved slowly into the center of the light and stopped as they saw us. They were dressed like something out of the 1800s. Cowboy hats, boots, three wore dusters, they were armed and indeed had spurs on! Two had double barreled shotguns, one was packing a Colt six shooter and the guy left center had a Colt Dragoon, a real live Dragoon with a rifle stock. Stan had moved left as I moved right away from each other. I watched the men and noticed something not seen until they got close. Each one had a star on his chest.
The guy with the Dragoon stepped forward then faced my way. “Constable, my name is Capt. Hobie Gilman, B troop Texas Rangers. We could use your help this evening.”
Neil (Neiwil) has done a nice series on the Gunfight at the OK Corral. I thought I'd take a crack at it. ;)

Idea for this scene and narrative: from sopmewhere in that dark part of your brain where the light shines in strange and mysterious ways and your thoughts don't run yet move hither and yon at the speed of light. The edge of man's perseption, a memory of what could have happened....Oh sorry just watched Twilight Zone!
Enough with the fog and dark (can somenody please turn the lights on)

Creepy, but I love it! Real Twilight Zone stuff, breaching space-time barrier. On which side of the "gate" are the 4 sherifs, and the cops? Can't tell. Just as long as everyone gets back to his right time/space. Good job with the lighting and fog! Really creates the atmosphere for your story! Keep up the good work! :-)

As Yul Brynner so abley put it, "I ask you, just don't smoke." Some modern magnum powder reloads in blackpowder shotguns may bannana peel the barrel or mushroom the receiver.
