Description

Johnny Carson: "It was so cold last night!" Ed McMahon: "How cold was it, Johnny?' Johnny Carson: "It was so cold all the witches' breasts called in sick." This is a picture I made of the weather function on my cell phone. It was only the day before I made this picture that I found out that I actually had a weather function on my cell phone. So, naturally, it became grist for the photographic mill. Anyway, the temperature you see here is 2 degrees Fahrenheit. I can't remember the exact formula for converting Fahrenheit to Celsius at the moment, but I think that it equals about -15 degrees. And that's not counting the windchill. I believe the windchill that day was something like -34 Fahrenheit. I don't even want to try to calculate that into Celsius, because, let's face it, ever since I meandered into my late forties, my brain has turned into chip dip. Anyway, I've posted this picture from last winter in an attempt to cheer myself up, as a form of reverse psychology. The success of this ploy could be described as dubious at best. The Johnny Carson has actually been more helpful. But then again, he was professionally trained in the art of cheering people up, and I am but an amateur. Why do I need cheering up? Because it's spring in Chicago. Now spring anywhere else is a joyous occasion, but not in the Windy City, (a nickname that speaks volumes.) To be frank: the weather in Chicago sucks. It sucks all year 'round, but it particularly sucks in the spring and fall. During these two seasons, it strays from the predictable biting cold of winter and oppressive heat of summer, into a protracted series of bipolar hissy fits. Pretty much like what it's doing now: Two weeks ago it was warm. One day it even got up to 86 degrees. The trees started to bud out and the flowers to bloom. Last week it was cold. One day it actually snowed. It's very disconcerting to see all those baby flowers covered in snow. It makes me want to go outside and cover them all in tiny little overcoats. Less than 200 miles away, in Indianapolis, it's 60 degrees and sunny as I write this. Here in Chicago, it's 39, deeply overcast, and raining. But hey, at least it's not 2 degrees with a -34 windchill. At least not now, anyway. Photographed in the Albany Park area of Chicago on January 21, 2011. To all who celebrate the holiday, I wish you a Happy Easter! And, as always, thanks for viewing and commenting on my gallery.

LOL! I'm laughing instead of just crying. Here in Seattle's history pioneers wrote home to their kin in the east, "There's NO WINTER!" Joyous, they expected normal results with seasons passing. 6 months later they wrote, "There's no Summer either." We all have something to shoulder. "This place is only suitable for ducks and slugs." Another famous quote.

Hey, it's been a bit warmer in Siberia. Of course, Siberia is also melting...they're finding wooly mammoths that had been frozen in permafrost for zillions of years (okay, not zillions, but still) only to float downstream or start stinking in fetid, fly-riddled mud in the 21st Century. I suspect we got Siberia's cold weather, so maybe the Chicago winter has just decided to replace the infamous Russian one. But I'm rambling...what a shot! And I love the joke, especially being of that particular pagan persuasion, it's always fun to hear about pagan mammaries. My question is a simple one in regard to that: Who went around measuring the temperature of witch titties? Anyway, enough rambling. I like this shot and it reminds me of why places other than Chicago are always so darn appealing.

-17 degrees Celsius is quite chilly even by my standards - how do you guys cope with such extremes? I suppose no-one could call your Chicago weather boring though! Chatting to a friend who lives in Texas close to the Mexican border today - they had 90 F there today.....

That shot makes me glad we live in Florida. Even tho we have had to turn on our air conditioning which usually doesn't happen until May. Nice shot Corey and we love the commentery.

At least it's warmer today! Yesterday it was cool and rainy, but well above freezing, so I kept going and looking at pictures of snow and such to keep my spirits up. Amazing how well it works, and how soon the effect wears off!

lol, Corey. I just spent a week in Boston, went to a Red Sox game where the temp was 44F. We looked like Siberian orphans and I was still freezing. I had to buy a sweatshirt from Suffolk University simply because it was the first place I came to one morning when we were out walking. So I understand, slightly, what spring in the east is like. Your narrative is funny, especially that line about "bipolar hissy fits" --that's one of the best!!

Love that narrative! You have a great gift. I like temperate...but it's been too hot for me to garden this week, in the 70'sF in April!
