Description

In June 1960 Associated Planets got into financial hardships and had to close their factual publications side of things, instead concentrating on their children's comics, such as the hugely successful "Gosh!", and their "Dixon of Dock Green" thriller weekly. In July 1960 the rights to publish "Space Science Digest" were bought by Messers Arthur Grimsdale and Normal Puckle. They had previously found success with milk deliveries and thought that publishing would be a good investment. The same creative and journalistic team were hired and the first new issue hit the presses in September with an October cover date. It was decided to carry on the numbering from the previous issue rather than start afresh. Aside from an interior editorial from Mr Grimsdale no other reference was made to the relaunch. These were going to be interesting times for SSD's loyal readers... The spacemen are by Anthony Appleyard, the space car... I'm sorry I can't remember. Thanks for looking, and also thanks to Newill for getting me back into this. Iain

Yay! The return of SPACE SCIENCE DIGEST ! The cover scene is a bit dull BUT this matches a lot of ANALOG covers from that era as they briefly expanded to a larger format.

Retro covers are sure fun to do. A couple notes to consider (or not): The cover sells the magazine and your type layout has covered up an important element that would draw in potential readers; the space station. Likewise, the mid-page type has covered some other details that might have drawn us in. Perhaps you couldn't save all of it but I think the type size could have been a bit smaller or favored the cloud area which is less interesting than the mysterious alien ruins (or launch pad). You seem to have drawn out my inner-editor. And now back to editing my se

Yeh!..Another brilliant edition..(I feel guilty for driving you back to the grindstone, but glad you're there..). AA's spacemen work well here, and the 'spacecar' is a gem, that's were NASA went wrong, building those silly tube frame things. I look forward to more editions from the dusty cellar, cheers mate.. (sorry it took a while to get to this, having set you to work my internet went off...ho hum..)

I love these covers you do, they're always great fun and so fitting to the "classic sf" style.
