IMO, a lot of good artists put a great deal of work into their render set-ups, only to have it spoiled by poor ambient lighting. Take a look at a shadowed object near you, right now - is it a black pit that swallows all detail? The above render shows the effects of various ambient/sunlight color balance settings and the use of a simple FG to control ambient falloff by distance. See User Forum for planet file.
