Description

Well, I decided to do another image with my Tranquility tramp freighter so I could show off the parts that move. You'll notice the crane, the antenna dish and the whole front section have shifted since the last image. I also reused parts to make the modular outpost at the left. Seventeen lights from the modules and airlocks and the running lights kicked the render time up to an hour. Of course it took about five mostly complete renders before I finished one that didn't have any obvious flaws. The tiny moons you see are Mimas in front of Saturn and Titan just above it. Not very dramatic, but for a sixty degree field of view, that’s pretty much what it would look like from the surface of Enceladus at around ten degrees off the moon's equator. This is probably my last image for about a month. A week and day from now and I'm off to the Writers of the Future workshop, and then after a few days back, off again for a weeklong vacation. Thanks for your views and comments and favorites. I'll try to keep up on random comments on images from people I've favorited. --- Beyond the Asteroid Belt, the other region where the Tranquility class freighters saw significant service was the Saturnian moon system. Jupiter, with three of the four large moons about evenly populated and the others either too radioactive or too far away, was not a good market for a small independent trader. Uranus and Neptune were too far away and too sparsely populated. And the Kuiper, despite its superficial resemblance to the Asteroid Belt, was too vast for two-way commerce between settlements and too deserted for most to care. The majority of traffic out there was from drone robot ships sent to harvest iceballs for Project Genesis's transformation of Venus. But at Saturn, with Titan holding the bulk of the population and the rest of the moons hosting a scattering of settlements and outposts, there, the tramp freighter could see good business, all the way from the Rings to out to Phoebe. I really love your designs, and this may well be my most favorite of all! The little details are what make this such a great model, like the hand-grips and the ladders, the fine details in the pivots for the parts that move, that crane is awesome, and the way even the radiator vanes can also serve as legs for a low-grav landing. Wow this is a great piece! I like the story that goes with it, too, and I'm fascinated by the passing reference to "Project Genesis" I'm curious about how you're envisioning that working... My thoughts have long been on putting a big shield between Venus and the sun to put the planet in perpetual eclipse, then drop some comets on it to shift the atmosphere's contents around... How close to your own ideas did I get?

Very nicely done!! The models are wonderful and the person in the scene gives you a good sense of scale. Excellent work. :)

I have to echo the NefariousDrO's comments above. I prefer this render to the first and I truly love that freighter. Have fun and inspiration at your Writers of the Future Conference. Always a delight to attend such.

This is a fantastic piece of work and I really need to catch up on your gallery. What I particularly like about this is your attention to realistic detail and attention to imagery that implies its own story. I'm always interested in the "human drama" inherent in any particular sort of image and this image provides drama galore, right down to the diminutive Saturnian moons. The accuracy of the image adds immensely to the drama as it's no longer just pure fantasy but rather appealing possibility. Great work and I love the technological and fictional elements of the text, but then I'm a sucker for good, solid and moving background.

Love the pivoting habitat section on the front of the ship. I know how much time and thought goes into a design like this. Well done!

Cool image...now, don't take this wrong...please...it seems too clean...too sharp edged. It needs a bit of dirt, texture, rust, oil, chaos to make it more real looking. I like this image alot and I'm sure you have many of your own ideas on how to improve it. Take my comments with a grain of salt and keep on man!!!
