Description

I posted a shot of the Mike O'Callaghan-Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge last October taken on the day before it was dedicated. Mrs Sea Dog and I had followed its progress during several visits over the last few years. Today the bridge is in full swing serving as a short cut between northern Arizona and southern Nevada. Before its opening all traffic was forced to take the narrow winding road down and across Boulder Dam - traffic jams during tourist season were horrendous. Today, visitors to the dam take an off-ramp before cross the bridge. Mike O'Callaghan was a military veteran and Governor of Nevada. Pat Tillman was a football star at Arizona State University and played professionally for the Arizona Cardinals of the National Football League. At the height of his professional career he walked away from the game to join the US Army. He was killed in Afghanistan in April of 2004. On the road to the dam there is a parking lot and trail up to the bridge. A pedestrian walkway goes all the way across - giving great views all around. The Bridge is about 850 ft above the Colorado River. Hopeful these shots will convey some sense of the immensity of the dam and the bridge. Incidently vehicles crossing the bridge cannot see down to the dam or river below. Enjoy.

I saw Hoover Dam last year for the first time and was blown way by the sheer size of it. I got to walk on that very bridge and saw exactly what you show here. It's simply a stunning piece of work. Even more so considering it was done without all the technology we have now--great shots!!
