I have seen something similar in the southern states - big thicket area - the spiral is done by a wild trumpet vine that wraps tightly around the trunk of it's host tree and squeezes it as it wraps upward. Sometimes a winter is too harsh or a creature decides to pray the vine out of the ground or it dies of other reasons and when it crumbles to the ground over a year or so, it leaves behind its "footprint." Fabulous shot.
