Description

This is a Hyacinth Macaw that I photographed at the Chattanooga Aquarium, hope you enjoy. FUN FACTS The hyacinth macaw is the largest member of the parrot family. These macaws are social birds and generally live in pairs or small groups. Pairs are extremely faithful and share the tasks of raising their young. The hyacinth macaw’s natural lifespan is estimated to be 30 to 50 years or more. Males tend to be much larger than females. This macaw’s beak is the most powerful of all birds and is used to crack hard palm nuts, which is their diet. Sadly these birds are threatened in the wild. They've suffered from poaching for the pet trade and for their feathers. Thank you all for your comments on my 500th post. :) thumb_2197107.jpg

Lynell, You would of loved one of my friends..she had 3 of these birds...and 3 Yellow Napes...they would sing Row Row Row Your Boat...and I would laugh...then they would say Whatcha laughing at honey??? They would whistle for her dog....they were hilarious..she also bred cockatiels....if they were sick she would come get me to ride with her to the vets in Elizabethtown...35 miles away.....she finally moved.......I hated to see her leave.....I still think of her and when I saw this McCaw I thought of her.......... I don't see how anyone could hurt them either Great capture..........Love the colors Hugs Susan~

i loved this when you showed me what you'd been working on and i like it even more the 2nd time around - you've managed to catch the playfulness i imagined i saw in him when i first saw him in the exhibit, and your equally playful title is placed with a beautiful subtlety... awesome hon! happy mother's day! xo

Absolutely stunning bird! I've seen Scarlet and Military, but never Hyacinth. In fact, I had a close encounter with a Scarlet .. I thought it was going to rip my lip off, but instead it stuck it's tongue in my mouth! I have been French Kissed by a Scarlet Macaw!! It was at a pet shop where the bird was the owner's personal pet.

He is a beautiful creature, his plumage is stunningly vibrant. Parrots are indeed a very long lived bird. Winston Churchill once owned one that was given to him just after WWII (not quite sure of the date). The bird passed away only a few years ago.
