My friend Qwenith writes childrens books and one of her characters is Alice the water faerie. Gwenith lives outside London on a family estate which includes a lily pond. The last time I visited, I was staying in a guest room which overlooks the pond. As I looked down on the garden early one morning, I thought I saw a lovely female figure with elfin features sitting on a large lily pad. I turned away to get my camera, but when I got back to the window she was gone and I couldn't make out the large lily pad either. When I went down to breakfast I didn't know whether to say anything or not. After a minute or so, Gwenith said, "I think you have something on your mind." After a pause, I said, "I think I saw your Alice this morning, sitting on a lily pad."
