Description

Just before Chtristmas 1960 AJ Crudworthy, SSD's biggest draw returned to the magazine. He had met with Norman Puckle and had persuaded him, over a glass or two of brandy, that sales would increase if Crudworthy's name was on the cover. Arthur was not a cunning man but the sales of his last novel were not what he had hoped for and he needed the money (cars and expensive holidays had taken their toll on his bank balance), so he reasoned that a few issues of SSD under his belt would do nicely. Puckle, somewhat worse for wear due to the brandy agreed and they signed a six story agreement. Grimsdale was furious and threatened a court action, but in the end he accepted the advice of his editorial team... who took Arthur Crudworthy out for a celebratory meal. SSD was starting to resemble the magazine of old... but tastes were changing, and SSD would soon have to adapt to those changes or die. The divers are M3 in a wetsuit (I know, I forgot the weight belts!) while the flyin saucer is my own model. Thanks for looking, and for your support on these covers. Iain

Thanks as always Neil... Yes, Crudworthy has found his way back into print again. But how long will Mr Grimsdale put up with Norman Puckle arsing things up for him?

Great fun - and nicely captures the feel of an underwater scene!

"...but tastes were changing, and SSD would soon have to adapt.... " Uh oh....... I can't wait to see what happened when SSD collided with The New Wave. I have a sinking idea of something like a Crudworthy pastiche of a Moorcock "Jerry Cornelius" tale.... Stray thought for sometime when you have spare time-- a Arthur J. Crudworthy author's website with biography, bibilography, and a some faux links.

What would SSD be without an Arthur J. Crudworthy story? SSD would still be interesting and informative but without that little spark of fun that a Crudworthy story always gave. "Those Who Sleep Below" ... wasn't that one of the few short stories that Crudworthy wrote that WASN'T made into a movie? Another wonderful SSD cover my friend.
