Description

...taken last night without a tripod. Location is six miles south of Reedsport, Oregon above the entrance to Winchester Bay and adjacent to the Umpqua Lighthouse State Park (where we are camping for two nights). ...we got to tour this lighthouse earlier in the day. Wait 'til you see some of Tara's work from inside the lighthouse and even inside the lens:) ...results are a bit grainy but thought the detail and color of this historic lens to be worth posting. ...this lens was hand built in Paris in 1890. It has 616 separate pieces of glass (each a prism). ...as a First Order Fresnel lens it is the largest coastal type light. It is 7' 10" in height and has an inner diameter of 6' 1". ...its' focal plane is 165' above sea level and its beams can be seen out to a distance of 20 miles at sea. ...yes, today such lights are only secondary navigation aids but communities all over the USA are finding ways to raise money to keep these historic beacons going and out of museum static displays. Bill P.S. For those who would like a little more info on Fresnel Lenses (First through Sixth Order), Click Here P.P.S. Just realized that Tara was uploading her inside the lens image while I was posting the outside image here. "Happy Birthday ~ for Tara (auntietk)" thumb_2200612.jpg

Great capture, Bill and I'm glad you posted this as it gives me a better insight to what it looks like from Tara's description

LOL! Maybe we should coordinate a little better. I had no idea this is what you were working on! I love it that you can see so many of the actual prisms in this image. Pretty good work, especially considering the adverse conditions! Thanks for showing the light at night ... this is a picture I never could have made!

Wow, this is gorgeous--we have one at the fairgrounds, but the enclosure is rotting away and the windows are all scratched and falling apart. Terrible way to treat such an amazing piece.

Outstanding night capture, sans tripod, of the lighthouse and its old but immaculately produced fresnel lens array, Bill.

Oh, MAN! This is just spectacular, and what a treat! I just saw Tara's photo from inside that lens, and now we get to see how it looks all lit up from the outside! Fantastic capture, Bill! Got a good giggle out of the fact you both were uploading the two views at the same time, and didn't even realize it!

Beautiful shot. Those colors are fabulous and truely vibrant! And, red, white and blue, too! Those lenses are complex and do a great job. Glad you could get inside, too. I'll be looking for those inside photos. :-)
