Description

This photograph has nothing to do with the CCR song of the same name, except that every time I look at this image the song comes to mind! I tried naming it several other things, but it just wasn't working out. Newport, Oregon Yaquina Bay Lighthouse In service 1871 - 1874 The Yaquina Bay Lighthouse is the only remaining lighthouse in Oregon where the light room is actually part of the Keeper's House. You walk up the front steps of the house, through the door, up two flights of stairs, then up a ladder and into the light chamber. This is one of the bedrooms on the second floor. The lighthouse sported a stationary fifth-order Fresnel lens, the light was only visible for about eight miles out to sea, and that light was blocked by Yaquina Head to the north. This made the light virtually useless to ships sailing down the coast. Yaquina Bay Lighthouse is a study in why you don't put the lighthouse where it's convenient to build it, you put it out on the cliffs where it's needed! Three years after the Yaquina Bay light was lit they built another lighthouse on Yaquina Head, which is still in service today. It's pronounced Ya-KWIN-a, by the way.

Oh, I really like this: the idea of a useless lighthouse really appeals to me. A bit like Agaran logic--don't build a lighthouse because you need it, and if you do, put it inland, because it looks so much prettier that way. Or something! And speaking of pretty, look at the light streaming through that window, and doing all of that really cool light-stuff on the wood surfaces! WOW! This is one moody and evocative piece. I love it, and the little added bonus of the helmsman's wheel is just perfect. Yeah, I like this, even if it's past my bedtime as I write this comment. Gotta move big, heavy things bright and early, but there's no way I'd miss commenting on at least one of the gems I've recently missed. This rocks.

It may be useless as a lighthouse but it is probably a lot more comfortable living here than out on the cliffs. And the light is wonderful.
