Description
This photograph shows the shallows at Ricketts Point and the measured nautical mile beacon visible on the rocks off Ricketts Point. The other end of the measured nautical mile is at Quiet Corner, Black Rock. In years gone by, this was the only way to measure a ships speed and despite modern navigational aids, this method is still sometimes used. It also helps fishing boats avoid the jagged rocks. A nautical mile is 6080 feet in length, as opposed to the land based statute mile which is 5280 feet in length.

So attractive! I have often wondered why these two sorts of miles are not the same.
