Description

Barn swallow in flight over Stirling Lake, Wadsworth IL. If it wasn't for digital photography, I probably wouldn't have a pic like this. Because there's dozens of badly focused or blurred pics to get one like this, and film is expensive. This is also a little more tricky because you trade off DOF for shutter speed (Aperture F-stop value goes lower), so the margin of error on focus gets tighter and AF doesn't always lock consistently on small targets. When it's not on the clock, I like interesting photography challenges like this. Still not quite as how I'd like it, since 300mm can only zoom so far out over the lake. (And yes, I do know an even stronger zoom makes tracking harder still.) Also a bit of pixel noise that seems to show up under some conditions. Nikon D5000, shutter priority 1/800 (or faster), ISO 800 equivalent exposure speed. That gives an idea, because EXIF data gets lost when I crop to frame the subject and when saving for web.
