Description

Captured 5/16/11, early in the AM, within walking distance of my reactionary residence. Definitely worth a ZOOM. Have never, ever, seen this particular species before....my first and only guess is miniature bamboo. Some flora connoisseurs out there in Renderosity might know the exact answer. I must have passed by the residence a ton of times, and never noticed these extraordinary shoots, unless they are of recent origin, which might expain why I hadn't noticed them before. Anyway, they are pretty to see in person, covered a lengthy perimeter of the lawn abutting a wall, averaged I'd say from about one quarter to one half-inch in diameter, and evidently are most prolific. And makes for great blowguns. I await the final determination as to its identity. Sayonara, thankx for the visit, and for any and all favs and laudatory comments.

Yes, horsetails, and the reason for the name becomes a bit more apparent as they grow. We have TONS of this around here, it loves the wetlands! Excellent captures of this heady profusion!

Horsetail, one of the oldest verified plants on this planet. Found in fossils from the dinosaur ages and thought to have been in place since the first creature crawled out of the marshes and breathed air. Very lovely but a pain in the posterior.

Well now, Horsetails it is, according to the response above. To say that is a weird name for these lovely plants would be a gross understatement. Nevertheless, thank ya all, ladies, for your answers and botanical acumen in this matter.

Very unusual...if these develop feathery flowers later, I hope you take another picture.

Great shots Harry! Bamboo is a big deal in south Florida. Everybody has a vase or even a water glass on their desk or coffee table with bamboo shoots in them. At some point they sprout leaves and I hope that these do so you can give us a follow-up. Dana

Oh, yes...horsetails indeed. The ones you have posted probably grew that tall within a week or two. Our garden is full of them with a different look. I'll try to get a picture and post it for a comparison. I am told there are both male and female horstails. Cool post of these quick growing little beauties/devils.

What great looking bamboo with its lovely colourful stems. Excellent capture and they do sound to grow fast. I'm glad I don't have to dig them out though.

After reading all the interesting comments, I had to look these up. There is a great image on wikipedia that looks like bottle brushes. Also an image of Kamchatka Horsetail that looks very much like the ones you have captured here. Excellent images and very interesting! Wonderful detail and colors!
