È un airone di medie dimensioni di colore bianco, caratterizzato da un collo corto. Il dorso è grigio così come la testa. Le ali sono grigiastre, più chiare rispetto al dorso. Spicca l'occhio di un color rosso molto acceso. Le zampe sono relativamente corte, gialle ed il becco è nero.
Le dimensioni da adulto possono raggiungere i 58 fino a 65 cm di grandezza ed un peso compreso tra 727 e 1014 grammi. Nello stadio giovanile il colore del corpo è molto più uniforme, di colore marrone ambrato e macchiettato di bianco. Inoltre l'occhio è di color giallo-arancio. L'apertura alare supera solitamente il metro.

Heron is a medium sized white, characterized by a short neck. The back is gray as well as head. The wings are greyish, lighter than the back. Stands out the eye of a very bright red. The legs are relatively short, yellow and the beak is black.
The size of an adult can reach 58 to 65 cm in size and weighs between 727 and 1014 grams. In the juvenile stage the color of the body is much more uniform, brown amber and white speckles. In addition, the eye is yellow-orange. The wingspan usually exceeds one meter.
