Description
This phenomenon is in the Black Hills of Wyoming, it rises 867ft from ifs base and is about 1000ft in diameter, the top covers 1 1/2 acres. This a sacred place for many Indian tribes to this day and many prayer offerings in the form of knotted cloth can be found tied to the trees around the base.
It is thought to have been formed about 50 million years ago by an igneous intrusion which in laymans terms is an upswelling mass of magma which then solidified. The surface of the land in those times would have been several thousand feet higher than now and millions of years of erosion have left it exposed.
All these words are my own attempt at an explanation from what I have read so if you are interested I am sure you can find it in your search engine under the title.
This is an American National Monument.

You got me scurrying for more info too. A fascinating place that I've come close to but never visited. Neat photo. Wish we could drink a pint and I could hear your stories first hand.

I remember Richard Dreyfuss sculpting this out of his mashed potatoes in 'Close Encounters of the Third Kind." I recently went to the Giant's Causeway in Ireland, which is also made up of columns formed by volcanic activity, though with very different results. Superb capture and interesting info. Beautiful POV, detail, and framing by the trees.
