È l'unica specie del genere Inachis da alcuni autori considerato sinonimo di Nymphalis. Il suo epiteto specifico fa riferimento a Io, sacerdotessa di Giunone dalla leggendaria bellezza. Ha una apertura alare sino a 60-70 mm. La superficie dorsale delle ali è di colore rosso mattone con bordi tendente al brunastro. Gli angoli sono ornati da quattro vistose macchie variopinte a forma di occhio. Queste macchie, dette ocelli, hanno una funzione protettiva contro i predatori [1].
