Description

It’s a well known fact that Nature has already invented everything, and that we wonderfully-smart humans can only re-invent and re-discover everything that already exists. I realized this when I saw the reproductive innards of a tulip growing in Evanston, Illinois. I thought I was looking at nothing more than flower bits, but upon a closer examination of the photograph I’d nabbed, I realized that I was not only looking at natural eye shadow, but eye shadow on the spongy heads of eye-shadow applicators. I had no idea that oddly colored tulips were also a source of eye makeup in colors coordinated with the petal color of the tulips in question. Needless to say, I was amazed. I’d say more about this photograph, and perhaps spin a tale, but that will have to come later as my Muse is currently taking his coffee-break and talking with other Muses on coffee breaks. I think they’re discussing new union regulations and stuff like that. I think they’re actually just gossiping. Muses are pretty big on gossip…and so I’m here (with Corey) on a rather chilly Saturday night. Spring has allegedly arrived in Chicago, but today has shown no evidence of this. Oh well. I suppose when my Muse is done with gossiping and drinking coffee I’ll ask and see if he has any ideas that might explain the absence of spring. In the meantime, I’ll just post this image, drink something with caffeine (as my Muse is apparently doing now,) and—quite possibly—head out for a few night shots in some well lit portion of Chicago. Or not. At any rate, thank you for viewing, reading, and commenting and I hope you’re all having a great weekend.

I am always so humbled by mother nature's design sense and beauty, I grow tulips each year and guard and protect them from the elements till they are ready to shoot and then and only then do I exhale, once I know that I have captured their beauty..... I do love the colours in this fine flower, the deep royal blue, the magenta, the lime greenish yellows...such a garish combination of colours that only mother nature could make work together. thanks for sharing this with us carl

Chip, the photo is magnificent. I knew that I was gazing at the 'innards' of some lovely fleur. You are so right. Nature as done it all so wonderfully well. Always your words are fun, meaningful no matter the subject matter. I can relate as my Muse had quite a coffee break. Just yesterday after a few weeks a picture fell into place. So odd isn't it! Anyway dear friend say hello to Corey and do enjoy your weekend.

A wonderful macro, Chip! It is amazing the things Mother Nature has to show us, if we'll just learn to slow down and look. I'm as guilty of NOT doing this as anyone, and possibly more so - at least lately. If your muse runs into mine at that coffe shop, have him recommend to her (I KNOW my muse is female...) to try decaf for a while. The little minx is so hyper; filling my head with all manner of images I don't have time to bring to life. She's got a list for me that will take a year......

You only need to spread some of that pollen on your hand or shirt to see its ability to color anything. And, like you say, the flowers are always so correctly color-coordinated.

Isn't that great? I've always thought they looked like those spongy applicators. Many lilies have similar applicators, although they're on sideways, like windshield-wiper blades. Excellent photograph! Love the detail and the color.

Even a muse is allowed to take a break once in a while...and you do quite well without him/her anyway! Great find and shot here!

OH WOW!!! What a great macro shot you have done here, Chip.! I love this. Yes, I do hope your muse will come back to you, so you can come up with a good explanation to this wonder of mother nature. I have had same problem on this two days cours in painting and yet I came up with 6 pieces. None of them are something to write home about. No wonder, if my muse is drinking coffee with yours :-)))

Muses are fickle creatures; you just never know when they're taking a break, in a mood, or just plain being lazy. Well, I guess you DO know, for it's those times when trying to do something gets you nowhere. Damn muses, anyway!! lol About this foto--I've seen the innards of lots of tulips (the outtards, too) and never thought about them being related to make up. I had slightly more prurient thoughts--bad me!! lol

I have this new digital camera and discovered it can take pictures of things I can't even see, so macros are this whole new world. I take pictures of everything, then zoom in to see this whole alien world lurking under my nose. It's no surprise you found a tulip wearing eye shadow!

Great pic! Indeed, it is a great display of how nature and human knowledge are intermixed. In a flower I see fractals, the Fibbonacci sequence... The image shows a fantastic shade of deep sapphire blue.

Hmmmmmmmmm. My Muse has become addicted to watching DVDs. He/she/it used to write screenplays, and now critiques other people's...What are the Muse and Inspiration Local 1701's coffee break rules these days, anyway? My Muse, being a Muse, threw the regulation booklet away. But onto your picture. Very nice work here. I like the colors, depth and sense of mystery here. And the fact that it took me a second to figure out what this actually was. You're right, the pistols/stamens/thingywhozit doodads really do look like eye shadow applicators! Don't ask me how I know of such things....

you masterfully bring the eye right where it needs to be here--the yellow is so alluring and radiates to the white the pink and the whole piece--well done--I love this!
