interesting plant. seems like a cactus kind to me. nice with the insect which is not visible at first glance. sometime when we visits places we can't be there when there is the optimal light situation (like morning or evening) it can help if you carry a 5in1 foldable reflector. this gives you lot of opssibilities for close up photos. in your pic you had hard sun light from the top. with the semi transparence of the refelctor you can diffuse the sunlight. another trick is to use a fill flash which works well in bright sunlight to get rid of the hard shadows. try at home with some flowers in sunlight to find out the correct dosage for the fill flash.
