Description

The concept of the Dyson sphere was first formalized by physicist and mathematician Freeman Dyson. His premise was that every human technological civilization has constantly increased its demand for energy. He reasoned that if human civilization were to survive long enough, there would come a time when it demanded the TOTAL energy output of the sun. He proposed a system of orbiting structures designed to intercept and collect all energy produced by the sun. Dyson's proposal did not detail how such a system would be constructed, but focused only on issues of energy collection. Dyson is credited with being the first to formalize the concept of the Dyson sphere in his 1960 paper "Search for Artificial Stellar Sources of Infra-Red Radiation", published in the journal ~Science~ The concept had previously been envisioned in various science fiction novels, many of which I had gleefully devoured in my youth (and do so still). This endeavor would involve an engineering effort of titanic proportions. We would not be able to undertake such an effort for thousands of years, if ever. Still, I have always wanted to depict such a concept, so here it is. The image shown represents a structure that is unimaginably huge. The central sphere completely envelops the sun at an orbital distance approximately equal to earth’s current orbit. The external ring structures are habitation modules which house the human race, which at the time here envisioned, numbers in the trillions (today’s population exceeds six billion). I debated inserting a distance scale bar but since I am aware that I suffer from an excess of geek, I allowed my sense of esthetics to win out. I hope you like it. Created in Ultra Fractal

Interesting construction, super work. Dyson refered to it as a Shell, completely encloseing the star, intercepting electromagnetic radiation with wavelengths from visible light downwards and radiating waste heat outwards as infrared radiation. One of the reasons we look for infrared radiation signatures as a possible sign of extraterrestial intelligent life living in such a Biosphere. Peace

The concept you describe is a bit frightening to me for reasons I can't even begin to comprehend, but thankfully I won't be around should this ever happen. The image is stunning, however, as is your mastery of the fractal program. It is unusual, at least to me so far, to find a scientific mind that can be so creative in an aesthetic way. Celebrate your inner geek...it brings awe, wonder and beauty to us. Can you animate this? Wouldn't that be amazing?

A wonderful concept and it would be a massive undertaking but these days you never know what they will invent. In our sunday paper today we have a couple of guys down here who have invented this little robot that roams over walls and ceilings without actually touching the surface, so you see your imaginative fractal may well come to pass. A superb work.

Magnificent image and even better concept Stan!!! Your design here is truly breathtaking and I can see how it could fit the Dyson idea. LOL I have to admit when I heard Dyson what first came to mind is a vaccuum cleaner that uses a wind tunnel. I guess that helps show the power of tv ads being run over and over, it ends up with idiots like me hearing the name dyson and immediately thinking of a vaccuum instead of a scientific concept. The idea of enclosing the sun in something man made is such an enourmous task I find it hard to even fathom. But your gorgeous image here does point out just how it could be done.

Really cool fractal for an equally cool concept. I had read something about it before, and there was actually a Start Trek TNG episode that figured one. Yours is very creative, however, as it does not restrict itself to one simple sphere, yet, it adheres to the basic concept. Great use of lights as well.
