Description
In 1978, on the advise of friends, I took my second trip overseas to the nation of Indonesia. I traveled alone. Indonesia is an archipelago of over 17,500 islands. On my first trip I would visit just Bali and Java.
Indonesia has been an important center of trade since the 7th century where Hindu and Buddhist kingdoms traded with China and India. Today, with 238 million people, it has the largest population of Muslims in the world.
Indonesia consists of distinct ethnic, linguistic, and religious groups. The Javanese are the largest and most dominant ethnic group. The country has developed a shared identity defined by a national language, ethnic diversity, and religious pluralism within a majority Muslim population. Indonesia's national motto, "Bhinneka Tunggal Ika" ("many, yet one"), describes the diversity found within the country. If this sounds familiar to those of us living in the United States it’s because our national motto is “E Pluribus Unum” (“out of many, one”). Indonesia’s national emblem shows the mythical bird known as the Garuda with it’s wings outstretched. It looks remarkably like our own emblem, the bald eagle.
So fasten your seatbelts ladies and gentlemen. I am going to take you to a land most of you will never visit. I’ll do my best to make it interesting.

wishes I could have seen it too 1978, but at that time i only traveled with my motorbike around mainly south europe. End of the 80's, your 2nd trip was my first. guess already a big difference, as if you go to Bali now, you will not recognize it (in the touristic places like Kuta etc.)
