Description

Another shot from the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area. The Oregon Dunes stretch from Coos Bay to Florence, and are the largest expanse of coastal sand dunes in North America. These free-flowing dunes are disappearing fast, although efforts are underway to save them. European beach grass, introduced in the early 1900s, anchors the sand and prevents it from blowing. This allows other vegetation to take root, and eventually the dune becomes just another hill covered in grass, brush and eventually trees. Seventy-five years ago approximately 80% of the dunes were free sand. Today only 20% of the area is open sand. The rest has been covered in vegetation.

Very nice. The dark/light contrasts are brilliant. And I really like the subtle shadowing on the dune in the foreground.

I love dunes; there's something so free and soft and wonderful about them. I only know the ones near me in northern California, it must be incredible to see an expanse as vast as this one. May they survive, in spite of man's help. This is a stunning foto!!

Wasn't this from the day we both said we didn't have energy to climb anymore dunes...and then we DID! What's a few more aches when there are photos to take? Superb postwork making this extraordinary.
