They call it a 'sail' after the similar-looking conning tower of a submarine which is also called a sail. It is a growth that indicates mating or ready to mate. It shrinks out of sight when they are not mating. Nice shot!

What a gorgeous (and apparently...um...ready) individual. Really well seen and presented. Pelicans are among my favorite birds: their resemblance to their dinosaur precursors is really uncanny: thankfully, their habits differ. This is really well seen!
