Description

The crew of this B-25J 'Mitchell' is posing for photos before starting engines for a demonstration flight at the Mid Atlantic Air Museum's 21st Annual World War II Weekend and 'Gathering of Warbirds' in Reading, Pennsylvania. This B-25J, named 'Panchito' is owned by the Delaware Aviation Museum. This picture was taken on 5 June 2011. On 18 April 1942, sixteen U.S. Army Air Forces B-25B 'Mitchell' medium bombers similar to the 'Panchito' were launched from the U.S. Navy's aircraft carrier U.S.S. 'Hornet' and led by Lieutenant Colonel James 'Jimmy' Doolittle against the Japanese homeland in a retaliatory strike after the attack on Pearl Harbor on 7 December 1941. For this strike all guns were removed, the rear facing guns were replaced with broom sticks to make them look like guns. Communications was only within each aircraft, and soon after the aircraft were launched they lost sight of each other. Each aircraft carried five jerry cans of additional fuel to extend their range.

A familiar sight! We have one here at Paine, as I'm sure you remember. Bill's avatar is a shot I took of him sitting in the nose. It's great to see images from your PA trip!

Actually, Paul Allen's collection has just added a second B-25 to the collections here at Paine Field...this one being a B-25J also... Your shot above is a beauty...like the boys in their authentic WWII garb.
