Description

On 13 June 1988, the Lord Mayor of Dublin unveiled this statue (by Jeanne Rynhart) and declared the day as Molly Malone Day. Many of you will be familiar with the song which can be heard here The song was probably composed by James Yorkston and arranged by Edmund Forman, and originally published in Scotland in the late 1800s. Whether there was ever a Molly Malone like the one in the song is the subject of debate, but she and her song have become an important part of Dublin lore. The statue has been graced with many new names, including "The Tart With The Cart", "The Dish With The Fish", "The Trollop With The Scallop(s)", "The Dolly With the Trolley", and "The Flirt in the Skirt" (The above information is from Wikipedia) Happy Molly Malone Day everyone! This was taken on Leslie and my first day in Ireland. It was a long day that had begun on the previous day in New York City. Dublin is a great city to visit, even with blurry eyes and brain. Thanks for viewing and for previous comments and favs!

Why on earth did it take so long to honour her?! That was one of the songs we learned even before going to school! It must have been such fun making the original clay for this sculpture!

So you were in Dublin's fair city? From this it appears Molly was quite a babe. Why she couldn't find a nice rich man I'll never understand. The various monikers just reinforce my admiration for Irish wit. A fantastic trio of pictures. Well done.

Faith and begorrah! Molly Malone is it now? Sure and it's a fine montage of pictures you've greeted us with, lass! A mountain of exquisite work went into this fine sculpture. And, I also remember the song that included the words, "I think most highly of Molly O'Riley."

First of all Lucinda, this is such a cool dedi and one I'm going to visit over and over. Never heard of her before, but now I'm fast becoming her biggest fan. Love how you took the time to look up a bit of the lore you spoke of and share it with us here. I have to say some of those names are pretty creative, and I was taken with (The Dish With The Fish). Awesome work

Even with with blurry eyes and brain, you have made splendid photo-shots, Lucinda. I love the tittle you gave this beautiful collage. Love the Dubliner's song, and their enthusiasm by singing it. I have to laugh about the names, this statue has. :) Thanks a lot for sharing, dear friend.

I have such great memories of Ireland, but the only problem is I haven't been there yet. I DID meet some of the coolest people around, and they were from Dublin; they spent a week with me in Cesky Krumlov, while filming a movie. I was in a scene, featuring me, a fountain, and the backside of a brewery. One of them looked suspiciously like a Jedi Knight played by Ewan McGregor, only much, much shorter and half as hairy as a Wookie, but still...anyway, because of them, I have great memories of a place I have yet to visit, but I promised them that I would. Anyway, enough of that...I really like this collection of shots you've shown us. The details are amazing and I love the various, subtle grades of color in the sculpture itself and her idealized, romanticized posture. Marvelous. This is a deliciously gorgeous and informative shot. And I'm glad to know that I've actually heard that song! A long, long time ago...

Fantastic collage and a nice touch to include the plaque. I'll have to check out the link to the words of the song. Nice individual photos - I think any one of them could have stood alone. Well done! Dana
