Description

When I first saw this dress, I thought of Queen Amidala witnessing the invasion of Naboo as hover tanks and armies of flimsy battle droids oozed into the capital city of Theed like some vast, metallic amoeba. And then, I realized, this dress has no sleeves and is—therefore—not Naboo-standard royal wear. But hey, it apparently comes with lights! When I first saw this dress, I wondered what sort of woman (or debutante) would wear it, and then I wondered if it was intended for one of those male women, with strands of matching lights in hir enormous, platinum-blond beehive wig. And then, upon looking at it again, I realized that perhaps someone at a West Coast street fair might find a use for it. And then—and perhaps I shouldn’t admit this—I wondered if there was a matching male kilt (perhaps with blue lights) that might go well with a bow-tie, cummerbund, and tails. (Though the iconoclast in me much prefers purple lights strobing in Morse Code patterns declaring some obscure existentialist axiom; but hey, that’s just me.) PJ’s birthday has come and gone: the precise day, that is; but I like to think that the celebration is ongoing. The iconoclast in me rankles at the idea of holidays and any other “single day” per year event. Shouldn’t every day be your birthday, name day, get-free-stuff-day? And so in honor of a birthday (that I consider to be ongoing) I’d like to dedicate this flagrantly red beauty of battery powered sartorial declaration to one of Renderosity’s finest. (At least I think it’s battery powered; it wouldn’t do to have the lovely…um…glow of this garment marred by a thick, black electrical cable trailing from the back of this dress like some umbilical cord in reverse. The poor woman would need an extension cord if she wanted to dance! I can’t help but think that a particular street fair in a city that isn’t Chicago might see a dress such as this: perhaps worn by a woman (male or female) with an extreme, conical hairdo, and matching (electrical) lipstick. I can’t help but smile at the idea of a lite-brite dress, and the more I look at this image, the more I wonder if stellar constellations are imbedded in that pattern of light. And before I wonder about even more odd, weird, bizarre things, I think I’ll just stop while I’m ahead and just go on and dedicate this belated-birthday offering to PJ, with wishes for a spectacular, fun, and photographically-fruitful year ahead. As always, thank you for viewing, reading, and commenting, and I hope you’re all about to have a fantastic weekend.

That is a splendid dress and find--and the shop is no ordinary dress shop, I see dolls on the shelf above. Something weird and wonderful runs that place! Perhaps it's a shop only you can find ;)

It is a great find, photographically speaking. For some reason I can't explain, it reminds me of those hand crocheted toilet roll covers that my great grandmother seemed so fond of, the ones meant to look like a doll with a very large skirt.

There was a time when I might have worn a dress like that...but alas, it came and went...never to be seen again. And a guy in the Phantom of the Opera costume would be a perfect match...with a red rose in his lapel...what a hit we would have been! Great capture Chip!

I kinda like that dress, though I don't know WHERE I would wear it!! You'd have to have some pretty awesome shoes to go with it!

Oh Chip...how I love your imagination! Yes, the photo is wonderful, but as always, it's your 'about' that makes this extra special.:)

I do like that one but I am intrigued by the little green number in the right corner, or the little red one behind, showing lots of leg (that's always a good thing)! About the power source? Well, there's enough room under the subject dress to trail a small electrical generator behind her ankles...of course she would have to dance in one direction only. I think PJ would rather carry a battery, ha ha!

OK, I guarantee if you send this dress to me, I will wear it...not only to a street fair, but I'll wear it in downtown Sacramento at night and take pictures of me in it. :-) This is I'd wear to a party, to the grocery store for the heck of it, and probably anywhere except the beach or to work. Honest. I adore the bazaar and rare in everything. And if you find that lighted kilt and tails, I know someone who would wear that and go to all the same places...just because we both have no shame. LOL Fabulous lighting and marvelous appeal.

Oh that "West Coast street fair" sounds interesting and I would like to go there some time. Does it have the same name as a prison that Johnny Cash sang about by any chance? Great image and amusing commentary. Sorry to have missed commenting on some of your other fine stories and images.

OMGosh!! I LOVE this .. I'd have worn it back in the day, just for the shock value! Right here in our little suburban town just outside of Buffalo, NY! Giggles .. can you just SEE the shocked faces??? Dunno which is better .. your glowing musings, or the Glowing Red Dress!! Love the shop, too. Whoever owns it must be pretty wonderful themselves!

OMG!!! I know queens that would KILL for this dress! Being honest, I'm probably one of them! And...the thing is only right around the corner from my house... Does make one wonder about the power source... Absolutely LOVE this, and what a great birthday dedication for P.J. I like the idea of the endless birthday. Certainly cuts down on the stress of having to remember all of them. Which brings me to my next point: Happy Belated Birthday, P.J. Great work here, Chip.
