Description
This is the lobby of the Dover Hotel, located just south of the Tennessee/Kentucky border in Dover, Tennessee, approximately 90 miles northwest of Nashville. Built in the early 1850's, it's located on the banks of the Tennessee River.
An amazing amount of history took place in this tiny hotel.
During the American Civil War Battle of Fort Donelson, it served as General Buckner's headquarters of the Confederate Army.
But the South suffered a major defeat at the hands of General Buckner's old West Point friend, General Ulysses S. Grant.
After the battle the two old friends met here to discuss the terms of surrender. After that it was converted into a Union hospital.
13,000 Confederate soldiers surrendered from that battle, and they gathered here at the Dover Hotel and boarded boats shipping them up north via the Tennessee River. It must have been quite a sight.
The lobby is now closed to the public, but I managed to shoot this through a glass door from an adjourning room that today serves as a small museum.
Julia and I were on another one of our road trips, and time was tight this time around. We'd like to go back in the fall. The area is known as "The Land between the Lakes", which is yet another story. . .
Thanks for stopping by,
marshall
