Description

A shot of some kind of fungus/mushroom on my trip/hike through Bluffs Head in CT =) I have a new camera and wanted a chance to play, I never get out enough just to take photos. I'm such a nerd, I have always been super fascinated of the different types of mushrooms and fungi I encounter, I wish I knew which where edible, which are not, and which may grant some other "unknown effects" =P This guy here was pretty big, I'd say maybe 10 12 inches across the "flat" edge of it... I love the way it "emerges" from the tree, something I wish I could imitate in my art w/ ZBrush or 3D Coat... I don't suppose anyone here could identify it?!?

Great find. This is called Ganoderma Lucidum AKA Lingzhi. It's been highly regarded by the Chinese as the “Miraculous King of Herbs for thousands of years! It is said to be able to improve the body’s healing ability, maintain a healthy body and promote longevity. It is used to make everything from soap, to toothpaste and even coffee! It isn't deadly poison but is very bitter to taste.

You found a wonderful specimen of Ling Chih. It should be safe to eat, BUT! To be safe if you do try it, only eat a very small piece the first time. You might be allergic to it. You never know till it's to late. ;D Excellent capture! :)
