Description

...this was our campground in early May near Crescent City, California. It was nestled under a canopy of soaring spruce, hemlock, Douglas fir and Redwoods --- the world's tallest trees. ...most of the old growth trees (but thankfully not all) were logged for lumber in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The lumber was used to build homes and businesses along the recently opened and rapidly developing West Coast of California, Oregon and Washington. ...today, 100 or more years later, these logged areas are covered with very tall second growth trees. ...the campground above was filled with reminders of the old growth forest in the forms of huge stumps among the newer growth. ...each one of these stumps towers 10-11 feet in the air. Most still have the notches where lumberjacks inserted the ends of boards to stand on as platforms while wielding two-man cross-cut saws to saw down the old giants. ...there is a haunting majesty being among all these reminders of the past. The lush greenery is everywhere...giving me a chill up my spine when I ventured out with the dog in that silent but dripping wet and exceedingly dark night in the forrest. ...today conservation and carefully monitored reforestation programs rule...such was not the case in the boom times 100-150 years ago. Fantastic collage Bill, I remember being impressed by these during our 'blog travals'...I'm all for forest management schemes, but also glad of their absense 100/150 years ago.The logging boom has left this great reminder and they obviously had the sense to leave enough of it alone.

I love photographs of stumps and I love exploring stumps when I'm out hiking. They contain so many different plants, and sometimes animals, and so much to see. I love all the shades of green is this collage.
