Yes indeed, it is very much like wood carving. This reminds me of pieces you can find in northern California, where carving craftsmen take redwood tree stumps and carve them into unique shapes, usually, to form table bases. Your coloring is perfect and you have the wood grain forming a very realistic piece. Excellent work!
