The Large Hadron Collider
The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is a gigantic scientific instrument near Geneva, where it spans the border between Switzerland and France about 100 m underground. It is a particle accelerator used by physicists to study the smallest known particles – the fundamental building blocks of all things. It will revolutionise our understanding, from the minuscule world deep within atoms to the vastness of the Universe.
Two beams of subatomic particles called 'hadrons' – either protons or lead ions – will travel in opposite directions inside the circular accelerator, gaining energy with every lap. Physicists will use the LHC to recreate the conditions just after the Big Bang, by colliding the two beams head-on at very high energy. Teams of physicists from around the world will analyse the particles created in the collisions using special detectors in a number of experiments dedicated to the LHC.
There are many theories as to what will result from these collisions, but what's for sure is that a brave new world of physics will emerge from the new accelerator, as knowledge in particle physics goes on to describe the workings of the Universe. For decades, the Standard Model of particle physics has served physicists well as a means of understanding the fundamental laws of Nature, but it does not tell the whole story. Only experimental data using the higher energies reached by the LHC can push knowledge forward, challenging those who seek confirmation of established knowledge, and those who dare to dream beyond the paradigm.

Le LHC va révolutionner notre compréhension du monde, de l’infiniment petit, à l'intérieur des atomes, à l’infiniment grand de l’Univers. Deux faisceaux de particules subatomiques de la famille des « hadrons » (des protons ou des ions de plomb) circuleront en sens inverse à l’intérieur de l’accélérateur circulaire, emmagasinant de l’énergie à chaque tour. En faisant entrer en collision frontale les deux faisceaux à une vitesse proche de celle de la lumière et à de très hautes énergies, le LHC va recréer les conditions qui existaient juste après le Big Bang. Des équipes de physiciens du monde entier analyseront les particules issues de ces collisions en utilisant des détecteurs spéciaux. Il existe de nombreuses théories quant aux résultats de ces collisions. Les physiciens s’attendent en tous cas à une nouvelle ère de physique, apportant de nouvelles connaissances sur le fonctionnement de l’Univers. Pendant des décennies, les physiciens se sont appuyés sur le modèle standard de la physique des particules pour essayer de comprendre les lois fondamentales de la Nature. Mais ce modèle est insuffisant. Les données expérimentales obtenues grâce aux énergies très élevées du LHC permettront de repousser les frontières du savoir, mettant au défi ceux qui cherchent à confirmer les théories actuelles et ceux qui rêvent à de nouveaux paradigmes. Gorgeous APO. There were a lot of people that were frightened this machine was going to create a blackhole that would grow and destroy the earth. I havent heard any fears about that for a couple of years now so I'm guessing the conspiracy folks saw thier science was flawed and gave up.

Beautiful image! Wonderful depth, colors, and design. It is fascinating to think of all the discoveries that will happen because of the LHC. There was a particle accelerator begun in Texas, but due to poor management, rising cost, and a lack of polital will, it was cancelled in 1993. I just looked it up to see what was going on there now and the last line of the Wikipedia article was depressing. "As of October 2010, the site is abandoned and run-down."
