This song (an excerpt here) was kind of dedicated to me by an ex-boyfriend at the end of summer, 1994. I was 17 then. When I heard this song I should have realized our relationship was ending, but was too naive to see it. It actually did hit me deep down, but I didn't want to believe what was being conveyed.
This image has a lot of personal meaning for me. The characters symbolize my ex (on our left), me, and my husband. Long story made short...the ex and my husband were best friends. During that summer, I actually spent more time talking with the man whom I would eventually marry than my boyfriend, so it's not too surprising that we ended up together. Here, the ex and I are saying our good-byes (as the "wind" takes him away from me), while my husband holds me close (the "better man").
The scene itself is set up like a play. I was heavily into drama in that time in my life. The masks not only symbolize a play, but how masked we are in our youth. When we are younger, we tend to put on a face that is not quite our own...and it takes a while before our friends, and our significant others, know who we truly are. Sometimes when we find out, a relationship ends because of incompatibility. But a relationship can also start when we realize we have things in common with someone else.
This was a life-changing summer, and one I will always remember. I found love, and then lost it...but gained another for life.
