Description

The Boulton Paul Defiant... One of those interesting subjects Neil & I are so fond of. The Spitfire & the Hurricane got all the glamour during the BoB, I'm not here to denigrate the achievements of those brave pilots who flew these two remarkable aircraft. However, there were other less re-known aircraft flown by equally brave young men during the Battle Of Britain, who don't get the attention they deserve. This is the first of a series of planes that fought in the BoB. So this one is for Neil (Neiwil) & his love of unusual & unique aircraft. Koodos mate, keep up the good work. The Defiant shared something with the Hurricane & Spitfire besides having campaigned in the Battle Of France & the Battle of Britain, all three aircraft had at their heart the Merlin as an engine. Neil let me have a go at his Defiant & I came out with this, set up in Poser & rendered in Vue. The AC & the defiant were from neil, Domus was used with my RAF uniforms & overalls, & the bicycles cant remember where I got them but they were made by Teresa Petty aka Phalen. freebies@phalensfolly.com. The render was postworked in P.S. for the priming flames & smoke addition, that was the only post work done. This represents a Defiant sortie during the Battle Of Britain, serving with Sqd 141 and were originally based at Turnhouse, then RAF West Malling, RAF Prestwick, RAF Dyce and RAF Montrose, RAF Biggin Hill, RAF Gatwick, and RAF Drem. The Sqd was reformed in 1939 & was first equiped with Gloster Gladiators then Bristol Blienheims & finally with the Boulton Paul Defiant in april of 1940. This particular plane H-TW L7009 "Cock of the North" was flown by Flt Lt I.D.G Donald (DFC) & Plt Off A.C. Hamilton as gunner. This aircraft was shot down by Bf.109 Es on 19th July 1940 near Dover. After July 1940 the Sqd was re-designated to a night fighter role, which better suited the Defiant, armed with four Mgs in the turret but had no forward facing mgs.

Good job on this one! But the bloke on the wing risks becoming fried from the flames coming out of the exhaust vents! Nice detail with the red at the vents! But, no foreward facing guns... what were the designers thinking of - a defensive retreat plane? Very nice background job here (photo? Poser? I can't tell!). Also nice how the grass fades into the distance. Makes me wonder what kind of super computer you've got, considering 4 human figures in the image, too! Keep up the good work! :-)

Thanks T-Rex, consider the flames creative licensing, I just though that it would make the render more interesting. The priming flames was something that was common to the Merlin power plants,& if primed improperly there could be a risk of engine fire. You don't see it in the render but Neil's AC model has a fire extinguisher attached to it.

Outstanding render. Haven't read any history about the BoB Defiant units (and I do read), so this was a fascinating bit of history. Your uniforms are outstanding. And the priming flames...! The US Army didn't complete equipping all armor units with diesel powered tanks until 1968. I had a tank platoon of M48-A1s...V-12 gasoline engines with twin turbos...if the fuel mixture became too rich for any reason, the tank would spew flames vertically up through the back deck grill doors. Many a guy lost his bedroll in the bustle rack behind the turret:)

Well you've certainly improved on the original..the wheel well covers on this always fascinated me and you've got them looking a treat here.Beside your excellent RAF figures the bike is an inspired touch! I may repost my Spitfire starting up at Duxford photo, that 'flamed up' a treat and smoke!...oh just a bit.. Excellent image Luis, thanks to you my patience is improving, maybe one day I'll install Vue and have enough patience to wait while it renders....but then I'd have to stop everything else, or get a second computer....so maybe not just yet......

Nice work! I've always liked the Defiant. The "turret fighter" concept was certainly interesting idea, and must have looked very good on paper. Unfortunately the weight & drag really took their toll on performance. And no forward- firing guns - oi!

Definitely some really nice work being put out here. Inspiring, to say the least! I do have some reservations about the location of the starter (?) unit. Looks like it's gonna be a bit dicey for the ground crewman who has to wheel that one away...if it were me, I'd have second thoughts. In any case, if I had more than two thumbs to put up, I would!
