Description

Last night I saw something at our suet feeder that resembled a bird, but had that something in it's movements that didn't quite fit into the "bird" category. Got the camera out and snapped a few shots and lo and behold, it was a flying squirrel! In all my years here, I've never seen one, and actually didn't know that they even existed in these parts. But this shot isn't one from last night... Today, my father was cleaning out one of our birdhouses (a house wren had crammed it full of twigs, but no birds!) Just as he had pulled all the stuffing out, who should scamper out and cling for dear life to the telephone pole that the house was on? Yes, the infamous flying squirrel. Only problem is, they are completely nocturnal and it was quite a few hours until nightfall. However, once he got his bearings and figured out what was happening, he zipped up to the top of the pole and did what he does best- took a (literal) flying leap and glided into some nearby trees- where I hope he found a place to continue his nap! I wish I had gotten a picture of him in flight- really amazing to see! We did feel bad that we disturbed him- had we known that the birdhouse had another resident, we certainly wouldn't have upset his lodgings! Thanks for the peek and I hope YOU all have a peaceful night/day! ;o)

Hooo ..... What a chance to see what kind of squirrels I've ever seen in my youth to youth camps. The transfer from tree to tree and far enough to be one of the other. Facinas enough. Congratulations again and many thanks for sharing ((5 + +)) Hooo..... Quelle chance de voir ce genre d'écureuils J'en ai déjà vu dans ma jeunesse à un camps pour les jeunes . Le transfert d'arbres en arbres et assez loin comme l'un de l'autre . Assez facinant . Bravo encore et mille mercis de partager ((5++))

What an amazing duo of shots! Gorgeous details as well...I saw flying squirrels live and in person only once, during my long-vanished childhood, and I'd love to see more. Unfortunately, I live in Chicago and I somehow get the idea that flying squirrels aren't exactly urban. This is fantastic.

We used to have these little guys visit our birdfeeders. SOOOO cute!! As long as they don't get into your attic where they can cause TONS of damage...but nothing cuter!!!

Great photos! I am not a fan of these little devils. We had them in our attic in NH and they are a MAJOR problem. Unfortunately they were protected and we couldn't get rid of them. Phone wires, insulation, wood paneling - nothing is sacred to these critters!
