Description

This one came about when bus driver said, for the umpteenth time, "Excuse me, there's a wheelchair coming on". No mention of the person in it. Quite often when my fiancee and I are out, people will ask her questions about me, some even refusing to acknowledge that I've spoken. I don't know this shot illustrates the point that well, but it was the best idea I had at the time. Oh, yes, I am unshaven and hair uncombed, but if I hadn't done it when I had the idea, I wouldn't have done it. This one's pretty personal, and I'm nervous about posting it. Thanks for looking.

I think you did really great posting this image. And I totally get it. We are not defined by our disabilities but by our abilities. A bang on visualization of the concept.

Good for you mate. I work with people who use wheelchairs due to having Cerebral Palsy, and yeah it's an eye opener when you go places. People park behind the van so we can't get the chair out, or recently, we had to change a boy at the swimming carnival. They said there was a disabled changing room, but when we got there, there was an entire blow up jumping castle in the way! Another mate of mine uses a chair. One day, a cupboard fell on his knee, and to cut a long story short, he had to wear a cast on his broken leg. He reckoned that people spoke to him and treated him totally differently when they thought it was just a skiing accident or whatever! The school where I work is extremely proactive. One of the things we do is keep a whole heap of old wheelchairs for sports days and the like. All the able bodied kids use them to compete in wheelchair races and also play wheelchair basketball. So this is you unshaven and unkempt!!!!! Mate you scrub up better than me on a good day.

No kidding ... you are not the chair. IT is the inanimate object. YOU are a photographer in Australia who enjoyes really good lighting, cute dogs and little kids, Jenifer, and your friends and family. Speaking of that ... the light in this is wonderful, and I like the selective coloring. Excellent work!

Dream or wishful thinking? The model looks very self-confident and that is a great message.
