Description

The ruins of Linlithgow Palace are situated in the town of Linlithgow, West Lothian, Scotland, 15 miles (24 km) west of Edinburgh. Introductory info can be found in my June 27th post. Photo taken May 1995 and recently scanned. This is the outside view of the castle. The kitchen chimney can be seen at the upper left of the castle and you can imagine what the roof line might have been. The structure on the left is St. Michael's Parish Church and is one of the largest burgh churches in the Church of Scotland. I have not found a better photo of the church, at this point, but it was completed in 1242. Destroyed by a fire in 1424, that rebuilding process was completed in 1540. Periods of disrepair, left the top of stone Crown Tower unstable and it had to be dismantled in 1821. In 1964, in a then highly controversial move, this aluminum crown was installed. Because of the new crown's light weight, the tower itself was salvaged and repaired. I used Wikipedia to establish the dates. Zoom would give you a better view of the church tower's crown. Thanks for stopping by my gallery, taking a look and for all your previous favs and comments. They are very much appreciated. Dana

Beautifully captured Dana! This is such an impressive castle and I love the rolling green grounds here. Oops! Looks like one of the Knights rode his steed up the embankment. ;D Great zoom!

Your excellent photo and narrative really establishes the antiquity of this star-crossed structure, Dana.

This is a fantastic POV Dana it really makes the picture very interesting. The church tower looks very good but I can understand the controversy because mixing old and new doesn't always work and the cost must have been phenomenal.

We go to Edinburgh at least twice a year, they have an amazing castle, but unfortunately we never see it as always at the dog show. Lovely captures of this castle only a few miles from where we go!!!
