Description

on/in the Kawah Ijen vulcano (East Java) they extract sulfur under the worst conditions. The carriers walk the 4-5km long route 2 times a day for 20000 Rupien (= 2.50 $) which are especially inside the crater life threatening, cause of the dangerous track down to the crater lake. the poisones sulfur fumes sufficate when breathed in, but the men there have only a scarf to protect them. The baskets are filled with up to 60kg sulfur rocks. As I was there in the rain season I wasn't lucky to get the shot from the crater rim of the colorful lake in the vulcano, it suppose to be the poisenessed lake in the world all was covered in clouds at the 2300m crater rim. here a few impressions: http://img213.imageshack.us/slideshow/webplayer.php?id=dscf1066mg6.jpg

Wow, great shots, sulpher is nasty stuff, think I've seen shots of that Lake nefore on Discovery or something. Life is very hard in many places, you do what you have to do to make money to just get by not get ahead. Peace

I think I saw these sulfur collectors on the Human Planet series on Discovery. This shot does a great job of conveying a sense of hellishness...

Hellish indeed. Your linked photos provide excellent context for this sulfur-hazy image. Hard to imagine working every day here. Well done.

That is terrible what they have to do guess we are just lucky here in the United States as not to have that kind of work and the picture tells it all almost looks haunting.

So you have been to the doorway of Dante's Inferno? You are braver than I am. Very impressive series of photos. I can't imagine working here for very long without some protection.
