Description

A few years ago, I did some consulting for the island Republic of Nauru, concerning historical environmental devastation resulting from phosphate rock mining. Formerly known as ‘Pleasant Island’, Nauru is in Micronesia, in the South Pacific. Its nearest neighbor is Banaba Island in Kiribati, 186 mi to the east. If you are looking for a place in the middle of nowhere, this is it. Nauru is the world's smallest island nation, covering just 21 square kilometers (8.1 sq mi), with approximately 15,000 residents and is about 2,500 miles Northeast of Australia. The island is surrounded by a coral reef, which is exposed at low tide and dotted with pinnacles. These pinnacles are the subject of today’s rendering. They have resulted from centuries of carving and polishing of island reef outcrops by the elements. They are extraordinary structures and appear as though they have been fashioned by the hand of a patient artist. They are a very short distance from the shoreline, so their intricate detail is clearly visible. Some of them have the appearance of a forest made from glass, like frozen Narnia waiting to come alive. Since Nauru is only about twenty miles from the equator, the light that bathes the island is of a most remarkable quality and the sky at sunset is a marvel to behold. I have tried to capture all of this in today’s rendering. I hope you like it. Created in Ultra Fractal. Everything but the ocean is made from bulbs. The reef pinnacles are third power Ikenaga bulbs.

This is stunning in its beauty Stan. The likeness to the pinnicles on the shoreline at Nauru is amazing. I had not heard of this island so googled it after reading your text. The site I saw had several pictures of these pinnacles sticking up and they indeed look just like your fractal. It sounds like it might be a wonderful place for a quiet holiday away from the hustle and bustle of a large tourist area. Once again Stan your delightful artwork is a source of pleasure and you again have helped open a new area of interest in myself and I'm sure in others too.

Very cool fractaling, excellent. Way back in 86/87 while working a contract in Madagascar a couple of us were contemplating a Tour of the Kiribati Island chain, it looked so cool on the, pre Google Earth, PC Globe software. We opted out of Kiribati for the more popular and touristy Seychelles, a mistake now I look back on things. The Seychelles were great but I think Kiribati with all it's Islands would have been fun taking an Outrigger from Island to Island but after 4 months in the Bush we wanted to PARTY. Peace

I really love the way you use fractal and/or chaotic phenomena as subjects of your renders in a scientifically correct way. The image itself is very well done, as usual, with the smooth glassy look of the pinnacles and the rougher texture of the reef in the foreground. In a way, you remind me some artists than choose one particular medium and/or material (say, bottlecaps) and then proceed to do just about everything they want using said material, even things that ought not to be possible to do with such restrictions (e.g., The Pietá, Mona Lisa, Cistine Chapel...). Bravo!

What wonderful pinnacles you have created here with a super glassy look to them which would look fantastic at sunset time. The clouds and the sea look super too. It is a very beautiful fractal scene.

I've never heard of Nauru. You make it sound wonderful, just like your image.
