Description

The Red Kite (Milvus milvus) is a medium-large bird of prey in the family Accipitridae, which also includes many other diurnal raptors such as eagles, buzzards, and harriers. In Belgium, the population declined to 1-3 pairs in the 1970s, then a recovery was observed: today the estimation is around 50-60 couples of this rare species. Picture taken yesterday (July 1st) in front of our home in Rulles (South Belgium), above a just mowed meadow... not a perfect picture but nevertherless, I’m proud of it: my best capture of this extraordinary bird so far... This bird is the main reason for my opposition to the construction of windmills in South Belgium... This is a very unusual profile of a red kite. Great shot. same problem in UK. In the '60s we lived in mid WaLES, ONE OF THE last bastions of the kite and a sighting was special. now in mid Wales , near Aberystwyth there is a feeding area where they fly in in huge numbers. The protection programme has been a huge success. they are a fantasic sight in the air.
