Description

"...and war has come because of me..." Taken from "The Thunder, Perfect Mind" from The Nag Hammadi. Probably one of the strangest and most beautiful of all the gospels in the Nag. "I am the knowledge of my inquiry, and the finding of those who seek after me, and the command of those who ask of me, and the power of the powers in my knowledge of the angels, who have been sent at my word, and of gods in their seasons by my counsel, and of spirits of every man who exists with me, and of women who dwell within me. I am the one who is honored, and who is praised, and who is despised scornfully. I am peace, and war has come because of me. And I am an alien and a citizen. I am the substance and the one who has no substance." The Thunder, Perfect Mind For those not familiar---the Nag Hammadi is a collection of codices that were discovered in 1945 in Egypt. These were believed to have been destroyed after the Council Of Nicea when the fledgling church was trying to define what would and would not be Christianity. These gospels make up what is known as The Gnostic Gospels---gospels deemed to not fit in with the new church's ideology, but instead belonged to heretical sects that were eventually outlawed and hunted. (search Albigensian Crusade) Anyway--- Sorry 'bout the history lesson---I'm a Gnostic, we do tend to ramble on about it at times... I think the early Chruch was not happy with the ambiguity; with the twinning of opposites--they wanted to give people simple answers, not make them think. Thinking is dangerous. ;) Regally beautiful and disturbing!

Hiya, Lynn! Biggest problems the Gnostics, Cathars and other "heretical" sects ran into was not believing in the divine right of the pope, in the divinity of Christ and keeping the female principal in the pantheon of the Trinity---the Father, The Mother and the Holy Spirit, which is where they tried to put the Mother at one point. Gnostics also believe that women had as much right to testify as men, including holding equal status with men in the church. We believe Jesus was a teacher, but for all that we also recognize him as a human that lived and died as a human. We never tried to make him a virgin birth and we never believed that he himself stayed a virgin. Since the possibility existed that he was married (they called him a rabbi---rabbis have to be married) we also believe that his wife and his consort was The Magdalene. Who, BTW was never considered a whore until some priest mixed his gospels with Magdalene and the woman washing his feet) All of this eventually led up to the purging of the Gnostic gospels, the Albigensian Crusade,(with the last stand of the Cathars at Montsegur) and the fight between the Templars, the Church and the traitor Philip IV in 1307. It's a fascinating history!! And I better stop now... :D Laura
