Description
This was taken at the Chateau de Breze, sometimes known as the Troglodyte Castle, located near Saumur, France. In the background you can see the moat, which at about 20 meters deep (about the equivalent of a 6 story building) is the deepest in Europe. Beneath the castle, which dates back to at least the 11th century, is another entire structure of underground cave-like rooms that were added in the 15th century. A fascinating place to visit...

I adore old architecture, especially brutal things like castles, forts, and stuff like that and the stonework; I love the earthtones and the washed out pallor of the sky/light and then the strong, predominating shadows. In short those three elements make for an exquisite composition and I really love the human focus here: a troglodyte? I also love the way this image evokes a lot of different stories, some ancient, some contemporary, some mythic, and some factual. A brilliant photograph always does that to some degree and this does it a lot! Excellent work.

Absolutely fascinating. I'm blown away by places like this and the POV of your photo here really shows a side of a castle I've never seen. Thanks.
