When I was yung and worked directly beside the marketplace I used to go there on market day just at the moment where the merchants began to pack up their goods. When I asked for two or three of these madonna lillies I always got an armful of them for little money. My grandma never got used to them when she me with them, she called them "funeral flowers" - on the other hand she always brought me some on my birthday, together with white roses and ivy. "Because you like them so much... but they are still funeral flowers!". So to me these lillies are a symbol for tolerance, not for funerals ;o)
