Description

This is a collaboration between myself and the very talented Fahad Sulehria http://www.novacelestia.com/ It was actually completed a while ago, but for reasons I won't bore you with, it took a long time to be ready to post. This image shows the cryovolcanism near the South Pole of Enceladus, the 6th largest moon of Saturn, and one of the few moons on which active eruptions of any kind have been witnessed. Enceladus is one of the best possibilities for life in our Solar System, based on the presence of salt water ice, which commonly only occurs in large bodies of water; it is thought that it may harbor a large underground ocean, possibly similar to Europa. Enceladus is also believed to contribute material to Saturn's E-ring by blasting water ice and debris fractures where the crust is thinner. These fractures are significantly warmer than their surroundings on the South Pole, and they occur in roughly parallel lines, leading to their nickname, "Tiger Stripes' There is a wonderful page at Wikipedia going into more detail on Enceladus and it's ice volcanoes. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enceladus_%28moon%29

I think that you did an exceptional job on this picture, you have really captured (IMHO) a very difficult subject to visually present. Bravo on a well thought out image! I feel like I am there, excellent my friend on another impressive picture!!! Cheers, David
